The Union of Cooperative Association for Saving & Credit “UCASC” within the framework of Italian Development Cooperation joint initiative, “Start Up Palestine”, receiveda delegation of experts from BancaEtica (an Italian bank working in ethical and inclusive finance, see http://www.bancaetica.it/idea-and-principles for further information), who visited Palestine from May 24 until June 4. The goal of their assignment was twofold:
- Map and assess the credit and saving cooperative sector in Palestine;
- Suggest a disbursement mechanism for the EUR 3M capitalization fund for local credit and saving cooperatives, as foreseen in the “Start Up Palestine” initiative.
During their two-week mission,BancaEtica staff had interviewed partners and stakeholders in the initiative – such as the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Labour, microfinance institutions, Palestine Monetary Authority, etc. As for the CASC network, the experts met with the cooperatives in Ramallah (May 26), Salfeet and Nablus (May 27), Jenin (May 28) as well as Jericho and Jerusalem (May 31).
On June 3, a workshop was organized at the UCASC premises in Ramallah, where the preliminary results of the study were presented. A comprehensive report will follow in the coming few weeks.
